MHA Frames New Deportation Policy for Illegal Migrants

Why in News:

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has formulated a comprehensive deportation policy to speed up identification and deportation of illegal migrants, especially from Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Key Highlights:

  District-Level Task Force:

  • States must establish special task forces in every district.
  • Monthly reports on missing or overstaying foreigners are mandatory.

  Verification Timeline:

  • A maximum of 90 days to verify identity/antecedents of suspected migrants.

  Holding Centres:

  • States must set up dedicated holding centres (not jails).
  • Features include:
    • 10-feet high boundary with barbed wire
    • Separate spaces for men and women
    • Medical facilities, LPG, open areas, ambulances
  • Families must be kept together.

  Foreigners’ Tribunals (FTs):

  • Guidelines also apply to individuals declared foreigners by Foreigners’ Tribunals (Assam-specific).

  Document Cancellation & Blacklisting:

  • Fake/illegally obtained documents (Aadhaar, PAN, DL) to be cancelled via portal.
  • Deportees will be blacklisted by the Bureau of Immigration.

  Foreigners Identification Portal (FIP):

  • A dedicated portal to capture:
    • Biometric data (fingerprints, facial recognition)
    • Demographic details

  Border Protocol:

  • Migrants caught at borders will be immediately deported after biometric capture.
  • Innocent/inadvertent crossers may be handed back to border forces instead of detention.

Vice President of India Visits Sri Lanka – First-Ever Visit

  • C. P. Radhakrishnan undertook a two-day visit to Sri Lanka, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian Vice President to the island nation.

  Expansion of OCI Eligibility:

  • India extended OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) eligibility to the 5th and 6th generations of the Indian diaspora in Sri Lanka.
  • Earlier, it was limited to the 4th generation.

  • The application process will be simplified, with documents accepted directly from the Sri Lankan government.

  Developmental Assistance & Housing:

  Trincomalee Energy Hub:
