- Supports P2P (Person to Person) and P2M (Person to Merchant) transactions
- Built as an advanced version of IMPS
Developer & Regulatory Framework:
- Developed by National Payments Corporation of India
- NPCI operates under guidance of:
  - Reserve Bank of India
  - Indian Banks' Association
Key Features:
- Uses Virtual Payment Address (VPA) instead of bank details
- Supports QR code-based payments
- Integrated with apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm
- Enables low-cost and cashless transactions
Global Expansion:
- UPI expanded to countries like Singapore, UAE, France
- Promotes India’s Digital Public Infrastructure globally.

Union Government Proposes 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill to Increase Lok Sabha Strength

NATIONAL

Why in News:

The Union Government has introduced the The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty First Amendment) Bill, 2026, proposing major constitutional reforms that could change the parliamentary structure of India.

Key Points:

The Bill proposes to increase the strength of the Lok Sabha from 543 to 850 members.
It proposes revision of provisions related to delimitation of constituencies.
The amendment also aims to enable faster implementation of women’s reservation as provided under the Women’s Reservation Bill.
The Bill is expected to be discussed during a special session of the Parliament of India scheduled for April 16–17.

Proposed Changes in Lok Sabha Composition:

The amendment seeks to modify Article 81 of the Constitution.
It proposes a maximum of 815 members to be elected from States.
It also proposes up to 35 members from Union Territories.

Major Change: Delimitation Before 2026 Census:

Currently, as per Article 82, delimitation is linked to the first Census after 2026.
The Bill proposes the removal of this time restriction.
It will allow delimitation to be conducted using pre-2026 Census data, enabling earlier adjustment of constituencies.

He created history by becoming the first Chief Minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Bihar.
He took the oath after Nitish Kumar resigned from the post.

About Samrat Choudhary:

Samrat Choudhary is a prominent leader from the Other Backward Class (OBC) community.
Before becoming Chief Minister, he served as Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar.
He began his political career in the 1990s with the Rashtriya Janata Dal under the leadership of Lalu Prasad Yadav.
Over the years, he shifted political platforms and later emerged as a key leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Bihar.
He also served as Agriculture Minister in the government led by Rabri Devi in 1999.
